Tokoname Ware
Smooth, earthy, and quietly bold—Tokoname Ware brings centuries of red clay tradition to the modern tea ritual.
Precision in form, warmth in feel.

Tokoname Ware, crafted in Aichi Prefecture, is one of Japan’s Six Ancient Kilns and is best known for its iconic red clay teapots. With a legacy that dates back over 900 years, it owes its character to locally sourced iron-rich clay—known as “Shudei”—which requires no glaze. The result is a warm, matte surface with a distinctive vermilion hue and an earthy texture that only improves with age.
What sets Tokoname apart is its fusion of form and function. From the perfectly fitted lids to finely crafted spouts that pour without dripping, every detail is the result of masterful craftsmanship. While Tokoname teapots are the most celebrated, the ware also includes bowls, cups, and modern reinterpretations that cater to both traditional tea enthusiasts and design-savvy users.
Tokoname Ware’s defining feature is its unglazed finish, made possible by the exceptional quality of its red clay. The high iron content creates a natural seal during firing, making it non-porous and water-resistant. The clay also interacts with tea to mellow bitterness, enhancing flavor and aroma. Over time, use creates a gentle patina, giving each teapot a unique, personal touch.
In addition to its famous teapots, Tokoname artisans produce an array of modern pieces that reflect the same attention to detail—minimalist vases, tactile bowls, and versatile tableware. Their quiet elegance complements contemporary interiors and mindful rituals alike. Tokoname Ware isn’t just for drinking tea—it’s a way to slow down and savor each moment.
